Friday, October 31st, 2014.
It had been months since that tragic massacre had made headlines. The country was spun into a veritable frenzy, and all the best investigators were put on the case.
After digging through your bag, you remove and unfold the worn newspaper once more and read the bold, black headline printed at the top...
"THE TRAIN RIDE FROM HELL.
FORTY DIE IN WENDIGO EXPRESS MASSACRE. ONE MISSING."
The Wendigo Express. A once beautiful piece of machinery turned into a horrific crime scene, one that found the detectives assigned to the case baffled to this day.
I witnessed dead men. I witnessed dead women. I witnessed... dead children.
These words, recovered from the video journal of one of the many victims, echoed in the minds of every investigator on the case. But yet, try as they might, the pieces just didn't fit together. And what of the missing passenger? Brock Kroeger? His fate remains unknown to this day.
Even the two investigators, officers Bollig and Swanson, were found deceased among the wreckage. Several agencies and task forces were sent to take over the case, but all leads ran dry. The nation soon forgot the tragedy of the Wendigo Express.
That is, everyone but you. You, and a few others, ready to unearth the mystery behind one of the greatest tragedies the nation has ever seen. Ready to seize justice for all the innocents who lost their lives on that train ride from hell.
You are sitting in the back of a rented bus. You look around you at all the likeminded individuals and smile to yourself. It was an eclectic bunch, to be sure, and some looked more inviting than others... but all that really matters is that they care enough to be here. There is still people willing to do good in this world after all, it seems.
You gaze out the window and see snowflakes start to fall down from the pitch black sky. The first signs of winter were here at last.
Your wistful gazing is soon brusquely interrupted, however.
You hear a creaking and a sputtering coming from the front of the bus. That... doesn't sound good. The bus soon slows down to a halt.
Concerned chatter quickly spreads through the bus, but is soon put to a stop by a man at the front.
"ATTENTION! I'm afraid we've... run into some engine troubles. Now the bad news is... we're far out in the middle of nowhere, so it may be a while before we can fix it."
You sigh to yourself as your fellow passengers grow increasingly restless.
"BUT! The good news is, we're not too far out from the train. It's only about a half a day's walk from here, or thereabouts. But for now... I know all of us need some rest. Lucky for us, there's some shelter just a quarter mile up the road from here. We can regroup there."
You file out of the bus out into the freezing Halloween night. Before long, you can barely feel your extremities... but you quickly forget when your destination comes into view.
A hulking, abandoned mega-mall fills your vision. You can just make out the words "Black Creek Mall" from the flickering sign out front.
At last, you make it to the front door and take your first step in. It's not much warmer in here, but it sure as hell beats staying out in the snow.
Or so you think. Little do you know, you've just stepped into what will soon become a mausoleum, full to the brim with screams, anguish, despair, and death. Little do you know, the monsters that you're hunting... they may just be among you.
